June 2009

The oldest section in Cornwall is Falmouth founded in 1940 by Lady St. Levan. This energetic lady also formed the sections of Camborne in 1947, Truro in 1952, Redruth and Newquay in 1953 and in 1958 took 32 ladies from the CWL in Cornwall on a Pilgrimage to Rome.

Branch meetings are held in a different section each time to give all members a regular opportunity to attend without too much travelling. There is a speaker at most of the meetings, so that members are kept up to date with all that is happening in the church, both locally and nationally.
After the October meeting, in Falmouth members had a surprise guest at their annual lunch in the form of Bishop Christopher Budd, who was on a parish visit at the time.

Members are all very busy in their own parishes and raise funds for all CWL charities and many others besides. They support especially the many homeless and drop in centres in the county and also send money, food and clothing to the Cornwall and Devon refugee centre in Plymouth.

All sections still raise money for the catechetical camps for our young people, which are now run by the Diocese, with the support of the CWL.
They also support Margaret Clitherow House for the elderly, in Torquay.
All sections have plans for celebration masses, displays of their work and social events to celebrate the Centenary of the CWL.

The first Branch event for the Centenary was a 3 day retreat in October 2005 at Treloyhan Manor, St.Ives. This was a marvellous opportunity for the members to prepare spiritually and to pray for the work of the League.
The next celebration for the Branch will begin with Mass on May 6th at St. Mary’s Bodmin at 10.00am, with an opportunity to enrol new members and for all to renew their commitment to the League. This will be followed by the AGM and a shared lunch. All past and present members are welcome.

Two coaches full of CWL members travel to Buckfast Abbey every year for our annual Diocesan Pilgrimage. This will be on May 10th this year and the Mass will be led by Bishop Christopher.

On August 15th another coach will be on its way to Plymouth Catholic Cathedral for a Diocesan Centenary Celebration Mass, again led by Bishop Christopher and we are very pleased that the National President will be with us. This will be followed by lunch for all at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel in Plymouth.

We are all looking forward to this year and taking every opportunity to promote our work, the aims of the League and to encourage new members.

Latest CWL Conference a success
Congratulations on yet another fantastic CWL Conference. The best yet, in my opinion in the 3 years which I have attended.
